We met a very odd American girl yesterday (was staying in the same Hostel as us) who with a completely straight face and sincerity stated:
"It is my hope that America will one day adopt Mexico."
I couldn't stop laughing for quite a while... I just don't know how to respond to statements like that... Though I did like it when Cath pointed out, "Perhaps the Mexicans might have something to say about that."
To which the response was, "Well we've already got a lot of their culture already."
I mean seriously, what can you say in the face of those statements said with such sincerity?

Strangely enough in the latter part of the 19th Century it was assumed that eventually the capital of the U.S. would be Mexico City...and that Cuba would eventually join the union etc...
There are already concerns in the U.S. of the growing dominance of Latin Culture and the Spanish language - especially considering the vastly higher birth rates among those groups. It would be a really contentious issue to 'adopt' Mexico (or is that like the U.S. 'adopted' Iraq and Afghanistan?)
